Dear Parents,

Hello!  I am your child’s teacher, Mrs. Betsy Futch.  I will be your child’s second grade teacher this year.  I want to welcome you to our class and invite you to actively participate in the education of your child.  I am looking forward to working with your child this year, and with your encouragement and support, your child should make much progress.

I began teaching in December of 2004 at Lanier Primary.  During that time, I have learned that it is very important to have parents involved in their child’s education.  Your child will have the best education when we work as a team.

There are many things I need to inform you of at this time.  Please read the following pages carefully.  I hope it will help you understand the routine and procedures of our classroom.  Please contact me any time you have a question or concern.  You may email me, call the school or send a note in your child’s homework folder.

                                                          Sincerely,

                                                           Betsy Futch

Lunch Time:  Our class will eat lunch at 12:10.

·         HOMEWORK FOLDERS:   Your child will need a 3 prong, PLASTIC folder for homework. I will put a sheet protector and some paper in this folder.  You will need to continue to fill the folder as this paper is used. (The sheet protector must stay in the folder.)  This folder will be our (parent and teacher) means of communication on a daily basis.  I will use the folders to send messages to you and for your child’s homework.  Your messages to me will stand a better chance of getting to me if they are placed in the folders.  Money and other important messages need to go in an envelope and put inside the folder. The students must return the homework folders each day with the homework in the front side pocket of the folder.  I KEEP THE FOLDERS ON FRIDAYS.  Please make sure you check your child’s folder daily for messages and that you remove the graded class work and other unnecessary papers.  You will need to check behind your child to see that he/she does the homework assignments and puts his/her work in the folder.  Folders are a very effective way of helping to organize the students and to keep a line of communication open between busy parents and teachers.

·         HOMEWORK:  You will receive a newsletter and homework sheet on Mondays. Please take time to read the newsletter.  It will have class information, school information, important dates and events. On the back will be a daily list of reading words and the spelling words for the week.   The homework sheet should stay in the sheet protector. Students are still responsible for their homework if the homework sheet is misplaced.  There will always be extra copies of the homework sheet in the classroom for the students to get if needed.   Homework will also be on the web page.  If students are absent, they are still responsible for the homework that they missed.

Students will have reading, language, math, some unit, and spelling assignments during the week.  NO HOMEWORK ON THE WEEKENDS!  PLEASE INITIAL ALL OF YOUR CHILD’S WORK SO THAT I WILL KNOW YOU HAVE SEEN IT.

·         GRADED PAPERS:  Your child should have a set of papers to go over and correct every other day.  If you are not getting class work papers, please contact me, and we’ll try to locate the “missing” work.  I do NOT want these papers returned unless you see “PLEASE SIGN AND RETURN” on them.

·         WEEKLY WORK REPORTS: A Weekly Work report will be sent home the first day of every week.  This report will inform you of your child’s progress (class work and behavior) for the past week.  Please sign and return the Weekly Report the next day.  You will get a copy to keep for your records.

·         [Picture]PARENT OBSERVATION AND CONFERENCES: I would like for you to take the time during the year to come and observe your child in action.  It will give you a better understanding of what your child does during the day.  I will not be able to talk with you at that time, but I am available for conferences between 3:15 and 4:00 most days.  Contact the office or me for a conference, and ALWAYS check in the office for a visitor’s pass before coming to the classroom.

·         [Picture]HEALTH:  It is very important to let me know if your child has a medical problem.  Please note it on the “Boarding Pass” and talk to me about it at a later date.  This card is for my use.

·         PHYSICAL EDUCATION:    Students will have P.E. on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.  Please make sure that your child dresses appropriately and wears shoes that can be used for running and playing.

·         SUPPLIES:

1.        PAPER:  Students will need Wide Ruled Notebook paper.  He or she can leave a pack here at school for me to distribute.

2.        PENCILS AND ERASERS:  Students need pencils and big erasers everyday.

3.        Folder:  I have a provided each student with a 3 prong plastic folder.   This is my homework folder. (The life of a homework folder depends on the child.)  Students will need to take care of the folders.  I will not replace those that are lost or damaged.

4.        Your Child’s Wants: Your child may want scissors, crayons, glue, markers, and/or colored pencils to have at his/her desk.  This is fine, but all students will be assigned a box with crayons, stick glue, and scissors to use for the year. My assigned box is to always stay at school.

5.        Please do not send rolling book bags or trapper keepers Rolling book bags are not allowed, and there is not enough room in the desk for trapper keepers.  Book bags must be the kind in which the contents can be seen.

PLEASE PUT YOUR CHILD’S NAME ON ALL HIS/HER THINGS:

·         ICE CREAM: Ice cream may be purchased for $.75.

·         SNACKS:    Our class will eat lunch at 12:10.  We will have a snack and story time around 10:00.  Your child may bring a snack.  It may be a sandwich, fruit, crackers, pop tarts, etc.  IT CANNOT BE CHIPS OR CANDY.  All children will be given a snack as long as you, the parents, keep the class supplied.  I need you to furnish the cookies or crackers, a box or bag of cereal, fruit cups or individually wrapped snacks.   If every parent sends a couple of packs of cookies or crackers the first of every month, it would help to insure that all children have a snack.   You may want to send $2.00 and I will get them for you when I go shopping.  If I do not have the participation, I will have to discontinue snack. The students really look forward to this each day.  I will let you know on the weekly newsletter when we are getting low on snacks.  Thank you for all of your help with this.  The students appreciate it, too!

NOTE:  Breakfast is $1.00 unless your child is on reduced or free lunch.  Students must go to the lunchroom to eat before they come to class.  Please encourage your child to eat breakfast either at home or school.  Research shows that students are more alert and do better in school if they eat breakfast.

Leaving Early:  My class instruction does not end until 2:55 p.m.  Please try to leave students in class until this time.  The students will miss very important instruction time with many times leaving class early.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Bus Notes:  If your child is going home a different route than usual, please send a note with the child to give to the teacher.  (For instance, if the child is riding a different bus or being picked up from school.)  This note should be placed in the child’s homework folder. The teacher will send it to the office.
